Staff Expertise

Faculty members have links to an extensive range of organisations operating in the field of human rights and are regularly engaged in human rights research, initiatives and collaborative projects, both within Australia and internationally. These include links and initiatives in relation to training and education, litigation and law reform, human rights organisations, academic conferences, and fellowships.
 
Training and education
  • OHCHR Consultancy work, including drafting and teaching training modules for peacekeepers on human rights in peacekeeping operations.
  • Teaching the law of peacekeeping operations for the Australian Federal Police, including a human rights component
  • Providing seminars to the Refugee and Immigration Legal Centre
  • Conducting CEDAW training in Fiji
  • Co-facilitating with the University of Melbourne’s Koori Centre for Health and Development a workshop on Indigenous Peoples Right to Health
  • Collaborating with the Key Centre for Women’s Health on an interactive presentation on women and HIV AIDS
  • ILOConsultancy work including conducting training in Mongolia
  • Organising a course in India on the Law of Peace Operations
Litigation and law reform 
  • Research consultancies for the Social Science Research Council, on the rule of law ‘vacuum’ in peacekeeping operations
  • Provision of Legal Advice on the David Hicks case
  • Involving law students in RILC cases
  • Preparation of Parliamentary Submissions on human rights issues
  • Conducting pro bono legal work, for example, on refugee and citizenship cases
  • Provision of legal advice to NGO’s and advocacy groups, including Women’s Health Vic, Youthlaw, Frontyard
  • Links to the Victorian Law Reform Commission, including participating in a advisory group on access to assisted reproductive services
  • Working with the Women’s Economic Equality Project based in Canada to develop a General Comment on Women’s Economic and Social Rights
  • Participating in the Advisory Council of Jurists to the Asia Pacific Forum of National Human Rights Institutions
  • Acting as Amicus Curiae on international law matters at the International Criminal Tribunal on the Former Yugoslavia (ICTY) trial of Slobodan Milosevic
  • Documenting best-practice litigation in the area of HIV AIDs with UNAIDS
  • Assisting PILCH with the drafting of a communication to the UN Human Rights Committee

  • Directorship of Child Wise, an NGO dedicated to ending child exploitation
  • Involvement in the Fair Wear campaign, looking at the exploitation of home based workers and the development of a code of practice and ‘no sweat shop’ label 
  • Involvement with the PILCH and Liberty Victoria proposal to establish a Human Rights Legal Centre
  • Assistance in the establishment of the Women’s Rights Action Network Australia
  • Involvement in the International Women’s Rights Action Watch Asia Pacific, based in Kuala Lumpur

  • Organisation of academic conferences on the Cultures of Human Rights, involving international human rights lawyers and theorists
  • Involvement in a conference with the Centre for Innovation and Equity in Early Childhood
Fellowships
